Alocasia Dragon Scale Aurea Care Guide
Share
The Alocasia Dragon Scale Aurea is a jewel alocasia, and it earns the name. The leaves are thick and quilted with a scale-like texture — it genuinely looks like dragon hide — with golden variegation washed over deep green. It's rare, it's slow, and it's one of the most striking plants I carry.
Fair warning up front: this is not a beginner plant. Jewel alocasias are fussier than your average houseplant. But if you give it what it wants, there's nothing else that looks like it.
Light
Bright, indirect light is non-negotiable — and it matters double here, because good light is what keeps the golden variegation strong. In low light the gold fades and the plant just looks muddy. No harsh direct sun, though; those thick leaves can still burn.
Water
Water carefully. The thick, succulent-like leaves store water, so this one wants to dry out more between waterings than most alocasias. Let the top inch or two of soil dry, then water thoroughly. Overwatering is the number one killer of Dragon Scales.
Humidity & Temperature
It loves humidity — 60% or higher is ideal. Warm, stable conditions; keep it away from drafts and cold windows. Below 60°F it will not be happy.
Soil & Repotting
Go extra chunky: lots of bark and perlite, very little dense soil. These are prone to rot, so drainage matters more than moisture retention. Repot only when truly rootbound, and handle the roots gently.
Feeding
Feed lightly in the growing season with a balanced fertilizer at quarter to half strength. Jewel alocasias are slow growers and light feeders — more fertilizer won't make it grow faster, it'll just burn the roots.
Common Issues
- Mushy stems or yellowing leaves almost always mean too much water. Let it dry out and check for root rot.
- Fading variegation usually means not enough light. Move it brighter (indirectly).
- Spider mites adore jewel alocasias. Inspect the leaf undersides often.
- Slow growth is normal. This plant takes its time — that's part of why it's rare.
