Philodendron Melanochrysum Variegated (Orange Pink) Care Guide
Share
The Philodendron Melanochrysum Variegated in the Orange Pink form is about as dramatic as foliage gets. Huge, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with orange and pink variegation splashed across dark green — it looks like something from a botanical illustration. The standard melanochrysum is already a collector favorite; the variegated form takes it to another level.
Mine ship in a 3" pot. This is a climber, so plan on a moss pole from early on — climbing is what triggers those big, mature, velvety leaves.
Light
Bright, indirect light. The velvety leaves burn easily, so no direct sun — but don't go dim either, or the variegation washes out and growth slows to a crawl. Bright and filtered is the target.
Water
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Melanochrysums like consistency — don't let them dry out completely, but never leave them soggy. Find the rhythm and stick with it.
Humidity & Temperature
High humidity is this plant's love language. Sixty percent or higher keeps the velvety leaves pristine and helps new leaves emerge without damage. Warm, stable temps; no cold drafts.
Soil & Repotting
Very chunky, airy aroid mix — bark, perlite, charcoal if you have it. The roots want air as much as moisture. Train it up a moss pole and keep the pole lightly moist to encourage the aerial roots to grab on. Repot when rootbound.
Feeding
Feed lightly in the growing season at half strength, every few weeks. Velvety philodendrons aren't heavy feeders, and too much fertilizer shows up as burned leaf edges.
Common Issues
- Crispy leaf edges are almost always low humidity. This is the number one complaint with melanos, and humidity is the fix.
- New leaves emerging damaged or stuck usually means dry air during unfurling.
- Variegation fading points to insufficient light — move it brighter, indirectly.
- Yellow, soft leaves mean overwatering. Check drainage and ease up.
